Description

This little jewel is as rare as it is
beautiful:
a Sonora tabletop phonograph
from around 1915.
Sonora was known for
its elegant cabinets, but they made only a few tabletop models, and this one is
by far the most uncommon:
It’s the only
one of its kind I’ve ever actually seen in person.
From its delicate grille to its charming
proportions – the mahogany case measures just 18.5”w x 17”d x 13.75”h – this
lovely machine grabs you attention and won’t let go.
It is certain to be a centerpiece of any room
you put it in.
I
found this wonderful little gem here in northern New England and, owning a
couple of floor-model Sonoras, and knowing how great they perform, was immediately
taken with it.
The mahogany finish is
all original and has a wonderful, warm patina; so does the nickel-plated
hardware.
The Sonora reproducer is big
and bold and should produce a comparable sound – all my others do – and swivels
to play both lateral and vertical disc records.
(With the proper stylus, it will even play Edison Diamond Discs.)
Like the more upscale Sonora floor models,
this tabletop comes equipped with their patented volume control, operated by a
slide-pull positioned on the left side.
I had planned to restore it – I even disassembled the motor to confirm
that the mainspring needs to be replaced, and never re-assembled it, though it
is all there in its own protective box –but unfortunately I have run out of
both time and space, so it’s time to pass it on to another collector who will
enjoy it as I had hoped to.
This rare
and stunning tabletop is sure to be one of the high points of your collection;
if you’ve always hoped to find one of these but have searched in vain, today is
your lucky day.
Best of all, I offer it
here with NO RESERVE – high bidder takes it!
I will ship this phonograph ONLY
within the United States. If you live elsewhere and are interested in it,
please contact me before bidding so we can discuss the shipping charges, which
can be very expensive outside the U.S. I ship once a week (whenever possible).
Having received, over the years, some items that did not survive shipping, I
always take care to pack very carefully. If you prefer, I will be happy to drop
it off at a nearby UPS store and have it professionally packed and shipped at
your expense. I reserve the right to raise or lower the shipping charges should
they prove to be significantly different than those determined by the shipping
calculator. I reserve the right to refuse sale to anyone with excessive
negative feedback or an otherwise suspicious history. Payment is due within
three (3) days of the auction’s close. Due to its age I am selling this item
without any warranty. All sales are final. I am not a dealer, and don’t have a
big operation with a staff, so I would appreciate your patience while I take
the time to pack your items with the care they deserve.
Be sure to see all the pictures!
I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have, but please try to ask as
early as possible, as it sometimes takes me a while to get to my email. Please
see my other listings, as I am running out of space and am thinning out my
collection considerably. I have several fine items up on Ebay right now, and
will be listing many more in the weeks and months to come, so please keep
checking. Good luck and happy bidding!
